Books I Read Before Homeschooling

I haven't been homeschooling long but whenever I start something new I like to do my research and read as much as I can on the subject. Then I take what I want to use and leave the rest. These are some books that I have read to get me started. I am continually reading so there will be sequel posts to this one.

  • Home Learning Year by Year by Rebecca Rupp

    • This is the book you need to read if you are unsure of what in the world you are supposed to be teaching your child. The author breaks it up by grade level and subject on what your child is “supposed to” be doing at that grade level. This is a book I'll refer back to quite often.

  • Wild & Free by Ainsley Arment

    • This book is perfect! It explains the many different styles of homeschooling, and there are a lot and just what it truly means to homeschool but to do it in such an intentional and wild and freeing way not only for your child but for you too.

  • The Brave Learner by Julie Bogart

    • This book was highly recommended and it was a great read to answer any questions about homeschooling your little one when chaos occurs. It has practical ways to help encourage and feel confident to keep learning even through the chaos.

  • The Read-Aloud Family by Sarah Mackenzie

    • I love this book and it has truly encouraged me to read aloud to my children more often. I am a reader and this just goes into the significance and importance of not only reading but reading to your child and fostering a love for reading.

  • The Montessori Toddler by Simone Davies

    • This book is beautiful. We just started implementing a lot of this for both of my toddlers. Not everything is practical for my lifestyle but it shows how your toddler learns and grows through everyday life and simple tasks and play. You don’t need toys or a curriculum to learn or have fun.

I am constantly reading on this subject because I really enjoy learning how our children learn best, which is through play. We are taught education by the standards of public education and that system doesn't work for every child. It doesn't work for most children. So it's like we have to unlearn all of this and try new things. So as my homeschooling journey continues I'm sure I'll have more books read.

I recently finished

The Creative Family by Amanda Blake Soule

This book is full of fun ideas and activities to do with your little ones. It just gets you thinking outside of the box and ways to encourage learning with simple things you already have at home.

Playful Learning by Mariah Bruehl

This book was completely fascinating in how she broke down the different stages in learning for each subject and how to best cater activities to the stage your child is in. Again the activities were super simple and easy to follow. I know I'll be referencing back to this book quite often.

What books did you read to get you started or to learn more?

I'll link other homeschool resources I used to get started here.
