Staycation Guide: A Weekend in DC (Dupont Circle)

We were long overdue for a baecation. So we decided to call up my parents to watch the kids for the weekend and we booked a hotel for a weekend in our favorite city: Washington DC.

We spent Friday evening through Sunday morning in the city.

Here’s what we did:

Where to Stay:

Yours Truly DC Hotel

1143 New Hampshire Ave NW, Washington DC 20037

Location:

Dupont Circle (a neighborhood in NW Washington DC

Transportation:

You can absolutely drive into the city and the hotel offers valet parking onsite.

My parents live in Maryland so we just took an Uber from their house into the city.

We used to live in the city so we were familiar enough to walk around. Google Maps is really good at mapping routes if needed.

We also used the metro. The nearest Metro station to the hotel is Dupont Circle which is on the red line. One-way fare was around $2.00.

We took an Uber occasionally. That ran around $9-$12/ride.

What We Did:

We decided to visit the National Gallery of Art. Museums are requiring tickets although they are free. The National Gallery of Art is one of our favorite museums. It takes a while to go through, so I would carve out a large portion of your day for it.

There are tons of others museums in the area as well as monuments you can feel free to visit.

We also stopped at the location we were married in.

Pride was happening during this time so we watched some of the festivities (from a distance) that were happening in Dupont Circle Park.

Shopping:

We headed to F street near Metro Center (the red line) to do some shopping at H&M, Zara, and Sephora. Everything is within walking distance and has a nice selection.

Food & Coffee:

Mercy Me was the cafe/restaurant at the hotel. Their coffee and pastries are fantastic! Especially the cinnamon roll!

There is a bar to grab drinks. I recommend their Savaughn Blanc and Johnathan recommends their Old Fashioned or South Paw Manhattan. Make sure to grab their hot fries or spiced popcorn to go along with it! They have this amazing spice that is housemade.

For dinner, we grabbed their sourdough pizza with a honey butter dressing and a burger, both were delicious!

Hip City Veg is our favorite quick bite vegan place. Their sweet potato fries are phenomenal! I grabbed their crispy ranch “chicken” sandwich and Johnathan grabbed their Philly “cheesesteak".

Rakuya is a Japanese restaurant we decided to try on the other side of Dupont Circle. I think we were being too adventurous with our sushi order and personally were not fans. However, the fried calamari and spring rolls were fantastic!

Tatte is a cafe and bakery across the street from the hotel. Their breakfast sandwiches were so good. I also enjoyed their green juice.

We really missed the city and it was so good to walk the streets of DC again. The atmosphere and culture of DC is something you’ll never find anywhere else. When we weren’t exploring the city, we watched In The Heights on HBO and binged the second part of Lupin on Netflix. I highly recommend both.

I’m sure we’ll be back soon.

Be sure to stay tuned for other city guides on other neighborhoods in DC.

love & light,
