Postpartum Essentials

I believe the most important part about anyone’s pregnancy journey is the part that comes after; the postpartum phase. I have written many posts about postpartum because it is a vital part of healing after going through such a huge transition mentally, physically, and emotionally.

These are my personal postpartum essentials that will help you in your postpartum journey.

  • Comfortable underwear: Your lady parts are going to feel unfamiliar after birth and the last thing you want is to wear underwear that is too tight. The hospital actually gives you mesh underwear to wear and depending on the hospital and the kind they give you, I find them to be the absolute best. This time around, I used the postpartum underwear created by Fridababy and they were perfect. I bought enough to wear for the first 2 weeks postpartum.

  • Pads with different absorbency: Your bleeding will start off heavy, gradually getting lighter and lighter as the days go by. So make sure you grab a few different pads because no one wants to wear those thick uncomfortable pads if you’re only spotting.

  • Witch Hazel Pads, Perineal Spray, like Dermaplast, and a Peribottle: These will be your new best friend. These are the tools to help the healing and make everything feel nice down there. I explain a little more in my guide to postpartum care.

  • Sitz Bath: after the cold therapy you typically move to hot therapy and you just fill this little pan with hot water, place it on your toilet, and sit over it and it feels amazing!

  • Huge Water cup: You really need to stay hydrated, especially if you’re breastfeeding.

  • Nursing Bras & a robe: You just want to make sure you’re comfortable and have easy access for breastfeeding. Also, night sweats are very real, so the fewer clothes, the better.

  • Prenatal Vitamins & Healthy snacks: These are still very important in your healing and self-care.

  • Comfy pillows & a good place to nap: Literally nap when your baby naps. You need to be resting as much as possible and on bed rest bonding with your baby to allow your body to heal and for your organs to move back in their rightful places.

If you want to learn a little more about the importance of the first 40 days you can read that here. I also share more on how you can help a new mom during her postpartum stage here.

Let me know what was essential in your postpartum experience!
