Book Talk: Leave the World Behind
A novel
Rumaan Alam
A white family of four: mom, dad, teenage daughter, and son head to a quiet retreat away from the city life to enjoy a simple and peaceful vacation away from their busy lives. Everything is fine until the black owners of the house knock on the door in the middle of the night. Suddenly their peace is broken and there is more stress and unanswered questions the longer these strangers stay. Something has happened in New York City but what exactly has happened and why did the owners feel that their vaca†ion spot was safe? No phones, no tv, no form of communication exists as chaos erupts and both families are left in the dark.
This book addresses the judgment and misunderstanding between race and the uninformed adaption in a crisis. We are so glued to our phones as a source of information that if we were left without them, how would we really survive? Would we trust the word of a stranger, let alone, one that does not look like us? Can a stranger in the midst of a crisis end up becoming family?
The book takes its time building up the suspense of the chaos happening in the city and quickly develops in the final chapters of the book leaving a thrilling and exciting rush as you are eager to learn more about not only their unanswered questions but yours, as the reader, as well.
A fitting novel for the year 2020 if I do say so myself. This book will definitely leave you questioning everything.
