Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See Mini Unit Study

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See by Eric Carle is a childhood classic. It’s a fun book to read with little ones. They will easily pick up on the rhyme, repetition, and color recognition as they want to read this book over and over again.

So I created a mini-unit study to further the fun and learning with cheap/free resources I found on the internet.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Book: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See by Bill Martin Jr./ Eric Carle.

You can typically find this book at your local thrift store or online for under $5. We have the board book version, but it comes in hardcover and a few other versions as well.

Basic craft supplies like glue, construction paper, crayons, play-doh, and multi-colored pom-poms.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

Activities:

  • Circle Color Sorting Mat with Matching Animals

  • Color and World recognition Cards & pom-pom Match

    • We lay the color words out on the table and point to each one to say its name. Then my child takes the bowl of pom-poms and matches them to the corresponding colors.

  • Eric Carle Alphabet Go Fish

    • My kids love to play Go Fish!

  • Count & Clip Counting Cards

    • I laminated these to make them last longer. I then use clothes pins for my child to count and mark the correct number. You could also just print the number sheets and use a marker or sticker to match the correct number after counting.

  • Animal Match Memory Game

    • Have your child match the same cards or flip over all over the cards to play a memory game, taking turns each flip until someone finds a match.

  • Animal Physical Activity Cards

    • Each child picks a carn and then everyone does the action. We repeat this several times to burn some energy. Plus it’s fun for them to copy the animals.

  • Animal Yoga Sequence

    • There is a youtube video where someone created yoga positions to go with each animal as you read the book. I watched this myself and then made my own version. You can do the same or just have your child copy the video.

  • Make Your Own Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See coloring book.

    • I took things one step further and had my child glue the coloring page onto the matching sheet of colored construction paper.

  • Make Play-doh animals to go along with the book

We did not do this all in one day. My children have short attention spans (as do most toddlers/preschoolers) so we split everything up throughout the week.
