A Letter to My First Grader

When my daughter woke up this morning, she asked could she walk to her class by herself today and my heart broke a little. I walked her to class on her first day and today was only her second. I thought I could at least get away with walking her to class for the first week of school.

I reluctantly said yes to her walking herself. I stood at the school entrance as she kissed my cheek and let go of my hand. She waved goodbye without even the slightest glance of looking back. I have a first grader and time is not showing the slightest of sign that it's going to slow down.

Dear Jordan,

You're a first grader, my beautiful girl! That in itself should be celebrated! You should be celebrated! It wasn't easy getting here and we honestly thought you would be repeating Kindergarten this year but you proved us all wrong. You are one of the sweetest souls I know and can literally befriend anyone. You are one of the smartest souls I know. It amazes me when you use a new word correctly that I don't remember teaching your or you quickly add a math problem. You are one of the most free-spirited souls I have ever met and I wouldn't want it any other way.

It all goes to show, don't let anyone underestimate you baby girl! Don't underestimate yourself. Dream for the stars, but reach far and above to the moon, or even mars.

Learn all the things this year. Continue to grow in math, writing, and reading. Develop a new found love for school because school is really getting real this year. Develop new friends that could potentially last a lifetime, and remember mom, mommy, is here every single step of the way.

Remember that I am your biggest fan and I will always and continually be cheering you on. You can always count on me and I will be there to help.

I am so excited for all of the adventures you will tell me about, the stories you choose to share, and the challenges you overcome. Know that you can literally do anything you put your mind to and you are one powerful, strong-willed little girl. You are my little girl, and I love you so.

Love always,
